Stevens – NJ Sea Grant Extension in Coastal Processes
njseagrant.org/ Coastal Processes Specialist – Jon K. Miller, Ph.D. Coastal Ecology Specialist - Amy Williams, Ph.D. Since February of 2000, the Coastal Engineering Research Lab, at Stevens Institute of Technology has hosted the New Jersey Sea Grant Coastal Processes Specialist (CPS). In the past half century, coastal populations in NJ and around the world have increased dramatically; placing additional stress on the already fragile areas where the land and sea come together. The Coastal Processes Specialist is charged with helping to promote a greater understanding of the valuable resources in New Jersey’s coastal regions, with the hope that better understanding will lead to more informed decision making and long-term sustainability. One of the primary means of achieving this goal is through promoting scientific literacy at the grass roots level through public outreach, designed to transfer research findings in coastal protection, shoreline evolution, hazard mitigation, coastal management, coastal policy and related topics to the coastal community and vice versa. Ultimately, the coastal process specialist seeks to link high quality multidisciplinary coastal research with informed decision-making to promote coastal sustainability through balanced economic growth and environmental stewardship. |
